Botox Q & A

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX is an injectable medication that contains botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that relaxes facial muscles and prevents nerves from signaling your muscles to contract. When BOTOX is administered to your skin, it smooth fine lines and wrinkles and even works to prevent new wrinkles from forming.

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX works in two ways. First, the medication immediately relaxes the muscles responsible for facial wrinkles to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Second, BOTOX regulates nerve activity, which controls the movement of your facial muscles. When the nerves in your muscles receive BOTOX, they are temporarily weakened and can’t send signals to contract your muscles. This prevents new wrinkles from forming, making it an effective anti-aging measure.

Where can BOTOX be used?

BOTOX can be used on fine lines and wrinkles around the face and is one of the best injectable products for the treatment of deep wrinkles, as well. BOTOX can be used on your:

  • Forehead
  • Frown lines between your eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet at the outer corners of your eyes
  • Smile and laugh lines

Depending on how subtle or dramatic you want your results to be, the team first discusses your goals with you before determining how much BOTOX to use and where to administer it.

What should I expect when getting BOTOX?

When you arrive for your BOTOX session, your provider maps out where to inject BOTOX into your skin and how much to use. Typically, most patients receive 6-10 units — also called doses — of BOTOX into different areas of their face.

Your provider begins by injecting a small amount of BOTOX into specific sites around your face, which may involve multiple injections in the same area. You’ll likely feel a small pinch or prick when the needle is inserted. The entire procedure typically takes 10-30 minutes, depending on the number of areas receiving BOTOX.

What happens after I get BOTOX?

Most patients notice mild redness and tingling in their skin for a few hours after treatment. BOTOX works immediately to smooth the skin, so you’ll notice a rapid difference in your skin right after treatment. BOTOX continues working over the next 24-48 hours until you see the complete results.

BOTOX typically lasts 4-6 months, depending on how quickly your body metabolizes the medication. Repeat visits may be recommended to maintain your results.
